Pre-Operative Instructions
It is important that you are well prepared for your surgery. The following information may assist you with your preparations before your surgery.
General preparation for your surgery:
Make sure you are aware of the time and location of surgery (in rooms, or private hospital)
Follow instructions regarding your medications (some need to be with-held on or before the day of your procedure - our clinic staff or your anaesthetist can advise you regarding this)
Follow instructions for fasting, if you are having a general anaesthetic
Arrange suitable transport home, if you are having treatment under general anaesthetic or sedation (you will be unable to drive yourself), or if you prefer not to drive after having a procedure under local anaesthetic
Have simple pain relief (e.g. paracetamol, neurofen) available and ready in case this is required
Arrange to take time off work or other duties as required, and for assistance with care of children or other family members
Wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing make-up and jewellery
Avoid smoking around the time of surgery, especially if having a general anaesthetic
Bring any relevant investigations with you to your procedure
For treatment in a private hospital, payment is required one week prior to surgery. For procedures in the practice, payment is required prior to treatment on the day of surgery.
For oral surgery, please have the following available at home for after your procedure:
A supply of soft food (you may require a modified diet through the immediate post-operative healing period)
Cold packs or ice to make a cold pack to apply to the surgical site
Chlorhexidine mouthwash (e.g. savacol) - this is available over-the-counter and at supermarkets
You will receive a post-operative pack with gauze and any other specific items required, as well as post-operative care instructions. You can also find these instructions below.
