Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon
Dr Armstrong is an Australian-trained specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with advanced training and sub-specialty interests in Facial Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. With degrees in both Medicine and Dentistry and a Surgical Fellowship awarded by the RACDS, he holds full registration as a Specialist Surgeon with both the Medical and Dental boards of Australia. He practices the full scope of general Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, with special interests in Orthognathic Surgery, Rhinoplasty (including cosmetic, post-trauma and post-orthognathic rhinoplasty), and complex facial skin cancer reconstruction.
After completing a Bachelor of Science at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, Dr Armstrong gained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Queensland in 2007. This was followed by three years of internship, residency and basic surgical training, working in a broad range of general and specialist surgical disciplines.
Having chosen to pursue a career in Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Armstrong went on to complete the mandatory Dental qualification, graduating with first class honours from the University of Queensland in 2013, with subsequent entry into the highly competitive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program.
Completing surgical specialist training in Queensland, Dr Armstrong has extensive experience in the acute management and reconstruction of facial trauma, congenital and acquired facial deformity, dento-alveolar and implant surgery, bone grafting, Orthognathic (jaw repositioning) and sleep apnoea surgery, oral pathology, TMJ surgery, salivary gland surgery, and facial skin cancer surgery.
On completion of specialist training in Australia, Dr Armstrong spent a further 18 months in London, UK, under the training and mentorship of some of Europe’s leading rhinoplasty, facial deformity and facial aesthetic surgeons. He completed a 12-month fellowship in facial deformity surgery at St George’s Hospital, with an additional role as a locum Consultant. This allowed him to develop a further skillset in complex post-trauma and skin cancer reconstruction, and facial aesthetic surgery. Despite now enjoying living and working in Northern NSW, Dr Armstrong still has strong links globally, and maintains membership of both the EAFPS (European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery) and BAOMS (British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery).
Dr Armstrong continues to expand and build on his experience and training, regularly attending courses, conferences and visiting fellowships both locally and internationally. He has co-authored internationally published journal articles and contributed to two book chapters.
After extensive training at some of the largest tertiary referral centres in Australia and the UK, Dr Armstrong made the move to the Northern Rivers in 2020, where he has established a comprehensive public service as a VMO at Lismore Base Hospital, servicing the broader Northern NSW region. He also maintains a Staff Specialist Consultant position at the Gold Coast University Hospital, for collaboration and continuity of care for complex patients managed across both units. He is regularly involved in the teaching and training of Medical and Dental students, Junior Doctors, and Surgical Registrars. He is a member of both ANZAOMS (Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons) and the AAFPS (Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery).
Outside of work, he enjoys the best that our region has to offer for an active lifestyle, including running, cycling and watersports. He is a keen multisport competitor, having twice completed the World Championship Coast to Coast “longest day” event in New Zealand in 2023 and 2024.
